Alexandria, VA’s Operation Illumination hands out free bike lights and reflective gear.

Reflectors placed on moving joints (think ankles) can greatly increase a cyclists visibility to drivers and can significantly improve a driver’s response time even if the cyclist had already been wearing a reflective vest and headlight.   You can read about a study on driver response to cyclists with and without ankle and knee reflectors here.

Headlights and rear reflectors and lights are still important.  Every night rider should have them.  Consider adding reflective elements to your knees and ankles.  The Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the City of Alexandria handed out free bike lights and reflective ankle and arm bands as part of Alexandria’s Operation Illumination.
